Tomorrow, October 9th, is a very special day for America, especially those of Scandinavian descent: Leif Erikson Day.

Leif Erikson was a Norse explorer born in Iceland, and has been credited since the 1800's with discovering the New World. Almost 500 years prior to the voyage of Christopher Columbus, Erikson led a group of 35 men across the ocean and landed in North America near what is present day Newfoundland, Canada. The Icelandic sagas even tell of him starting a settlement on the island and calling it Leifsbudir, which roughly translates to “Leif’s Storage Houses.”
The holiday itself began in 1930, first celebrated by the state of Wisconsin. Later followed by six other states and the province of Saskatchewan, Canada, Leif Erikson Day was finally declared a national observance in 1964. Every president since Lyndon Johnson has renewed the declaration of this holiday yearly with a proclamation highlighting the achievements of Nordic Americans and rejoicing in the spirit of discovery and advancement.
Even those who aren’t of Nordic decent can celebrate this day, as it marks the beginnings of our national history, and a perfect way to celebrate is by wearing Norse and Celtic Style Jewelry.

Intricate knot designs, antiqued metals, and jewelry that incorporates Viking elements such as axes and horns are great examples of stand-out celebratory pieces.

Leif Erikson may have discovered America, but it’s never to late for modern man to discover the beauty of Scandinavian jewelry and art.

In 1963, a commercial artist named Harvey Ball created the well known symbol, the smiley face. He designed it in under 10 minutes, and was paid $240 for the entire campaign. He received no further profits from his little invention. This round, yellow and happy icon continues to be recognized as a symbol of cheer and high spirits. Ball was concerned that the original intent of his smiley face would lose meaning so he decided to dedicate a special day to it; he declared the first Friday of every October to be “World Smile Day.”

The first World Smile Day started in Massachusetts in 1999 but is now celebrated around the world! This day gives each person the power to make a positive difference, no matter how small. Unfortunately, Ball died in 2001 but left behind his symbol of happiness to the Harvey Ball World Smile Foundation which sponsors this special day each year. This non-profit foundation also supports children’s causes and is dedicated to making people smile. The catch phrase that they use is “Do an act of kindness- help one person smile”.
It didn’t take long for the smiley face to achieve an identity of its own that swept the nation. By the early 1970’s, it was the hottest selling image in the country, appearing on countless products. The U.S post office even issued a stamp with the smiley face on it. Today, the image is not as popular but hasn’t disappeared.

This year, October 7th is World Smile Day. It’s an opportunity to do an act of kindness, to make someone smile, or both! Support World Smile day by wearing the image on your jewelry or giving a smiley to someone else. Remember this bright little icon and improve the world, one smile at a time.

Jewelry celebration: Belly bling for classical music month
When we think, September, we, the labour day think cooking, back to school, and the color and the beauty of the upcoming autumn, but is also a very special month for history in September: national month for classical music.

Classic finds that it is historical beginnings, as early as the eleven hundreds, but in the centuries that follow they would form the basis and form for literally every style of music that came there after. The traditional definitions of classical music, place the golden age of technical beauty and influence directly in the as "common practice time" a historical period from about 1550 to 1900 mentioned (such as for the decades of Bach, Beethoven, musical). The term itself was not however even up to the 1830's.
Since the beginning of the twentieth century and today still, pop music has developed steadily, although the traditional technical knowledge and sophisticated musical language, to characterize the classical music in General. And the classic genre itself has also adapted to modern taste, retaining the structure and complexity while the coming on not Orchestra instruments such as guitar and bass, electric keyboards and synthesizers. Music's evolution include the other courses in which the musicians and composers who make it possible, that have come to embrace alternative looks like body piercing and colored hair, which would never have seen the musical community only decades ago.
