America Recycles Day is celebrated on November 15th each year to raise awareness about the benefits of recycling. It is a nationally recognized holiday that started in 1997. Communities across American have been using this day to educate and motivate others to recycle and to buy products made with recycled materials. We must spread the word of what can be done if we all work together!

America Recycles Day

Recycling is something we have all been taught to do since we were young, but do we really do it? Do you know the impact we could have on the world if everyone recycled!? Let’s start by talking about what recycling is. Recycling is reusing materials instead of disregarding them as garbage. Waste can be reused in its original manner or converted into new materials. Typical materials we can recycle are paper, metal, plastic, glass, styrofoam, textiles and electronics. These materials are brought to a collection center, cleaned, and reprocessed into new materials and new products. This benefits the environment in many ways.

Jewelry and tattoos with Recycling Symbol

Recycling saves energy, money and land space. It costs less money to reprocess used materials than it does to create them from scratch. It also reduces trash dumped in land fills, and keep in mind, most trash is not biodegradable, so it just sits there and builds up over time. Yuck! Recycling is also good for the air and water. Decomposing waste releases harmful toxins, chemicals and gases into the air and soil which eventually reach our water sources. Decreasing emissions of these gases will also help with global climate change. Therefore, the more we recycle, the less polluted our air and water will be. Don’t you want to breathe cleaner air and drink cleaner water? I know I do! Recycling also preserves wildlife because we are cutting down fewer trees to make new materials. This can help with extinction problems and leave more natural habitat for various animal species.

Thousands of events across the country will be taking place to celebrate the 14th annual America Recycles Day. Communities are cleaning up their towns and joining the festivities to help the environment. Recycling helps maintain the environment for generations to come! The international symbol for recycling is three arrows moving in a triangle. Each arrow represents a part of the process; reduce, reuse, recycle. Recycling is the easiest way to go green!

Organic bone, wood, and horn tapers and plugs

If you’re a jewelry lover like me, another awesome way to go green is by wearing natural or organic jewelry. There are some really beautiful natural stone tapers, tunnels, bracelets, earrings and belly rings available, and you can feel good about wearing them. You can be fashionable while respecting the environment at the same time. So remember to celebrate America Recycles Day in your own special way!

Ways that the pierced can recycle, reduce, and reuse:

Reduce, Recycle, and Reuse

1. Old body jewelry balls and gems that have been stripped or broken make great beads for all sorts of craft projects.

2. Charms and dangles from necklaces, belly rings, and just about anything make adorable charms for your shoelaces and cell phones.

3. BodyCandy ships our merchandise in reusable padded envelopes and boxes from the US Postal Service, so if you need to make a return or reship items as a gift, just cover or remove the shipping label and readdress.  Pop your pieces back in, tape it up, and you’re good to go for a second usage!

4. Instead of using all that water and paper products for washes and soaks, get your hands on some H2Ocean piercing aftercare spray.  Then when you’re done with it, recycle the can.

Amongst the rain and mud, it’s hard but you can still look fashionable.  Color is so important for Fall, and the rich, vivacious colors popular this year will bring your outfits to life.  It’s easy to make use of color to create combinations for the unique look you desire.

Popular Accessory Colors for Fall

The best part about the Fall season is that you can wear comfortable, everyday clothes, and spice it up effortlessly with jewelry.  You don’t need to go on a shopping spree for an expensive new Autumn wardrobe; just play around by adding some vibrant earrings, necklaces, body jewelry, and rings to a simple outfit.  Depending on your style, there are always plenty of choices that are totally chic.

Vibrant Orangey Toned Body Jewelry

This season it’s all about the warm persimmons, garnets, cherries, and safflowers.  A simple black sweater and jeans can be transformed to a totally trendy look in a matter of seconds with colorful baubles.  Mix and match antique styles, feathers, and other Fall toned items.  Try to stay away from neons and go with deeper, richer tones, and if you can’t decide, look outside!  The natural colors of changing leaves are a reminder of what’s in right now.

Body Jewelry in Autumn Colors

Turquoise is another fun Fall worthy color that can completely change your look.  Natural blues and greens mixed in with that turquoise hue is very flattering, especially for brunettes, and they’re easy to find in rings, plugs, bracelets, and more.

Turquoise Jewelry for Fall

Big statement earrings are also a must have.  They can transform your face by making the nose appear smaller, bringing out your eye color, and creating body and movement.  Long chandelier or feather earrings are a part of the bohemian look that’s definitely on trend right now, and as a bonus they look great whether your hair is down or up.  Gold is also very popular right now.  More and more people are drifting away from silver and polished steel and sporting gold tone jewelry for Fall.  The best thing about earrings is that they never go completely out of fashion, so keep that collection growing!

Beautiful Gold Tone Dangle Earrings

A real fashionista knows how to make the same outfit look completely different just with the jewelry they choose to wear.  So next time you need to change up your favorite Fall outfit (like those leggings, tall boots, or scarves that you don’t want to take off) always remember that accessories are an easy and playful solution, and have fun with Fall fashion!

The Holiday season is fast approaching, and to prevent piercing and jewelry mishaps, it’s time to start thinking about how to make our Holiday worry free.

Holiday Shopping

It may be easy to slack on cleaning, soaking, or protecting one or more of our piercings during the busy Holiday rush.  With all of the shopping, traffic, errands, and extra work, there’s barely time to squeeze in a two minute shower, let alone all the time and ceremony of a ten minute sea salt rinse and a five minute cleanse with antibacterial soap.  That’s where some handy little helpers step in.  With the variety of on-the-go aftercare products readily available, you can choose from ready swabs, sea salt sprays, mouth rinses for oral piercings, and even handy polishing cloths to do a quick shine-up before that important dinner.  If you’re anything like me, you’ll want to keep a set of your favorites in the house and the car at all times for those “just in case” situations.

Piercing and Aftercare Products

This is also the perfect time of year to build your backstock of jewelry items so that you won’t be caught without a piece of jewelry to wear if anything should accidentally break, strip its threads, or have a vital piece get lost.  Simple but cute versions of most body jewelry items can be found at great prices this time of year, so snatching up a few to have as back-ups is a breeze.  Just check out the cute pieces below, all just 99 cents.

Standard Acrylic Belly Rings

Cute Inexpensive Captive Rings

Finally, for the pierced people in your life, it’s extremely cost effective (and more heartfelt) to put together your own matching sets of jewelry as gifts.  Giving someone with multiple piercings a set of matching body jewelry featuring their favorite colors or motifs is a cute way to show you care, and with online shopping you can do it all from home.  Take the set we’ve made below.  Starting with a staple piece (we chose a multi-functional plain stainless steel captive on clearance for just $0.39) a cute Holiday set with matching nose bones, belly rings, labret studs, and even changeable replacement balls can come together for just a few dollars.

Matching Clearance Priced Body Jewelry

The Holidays may be hectic, hair raising, and downright exhausting sometimes, but if we arm ourselves with the right tools to get the job done, we can all have some sweet seasonal fun.

Cheap Body Jewelry

Cheap Body Jewelry

Sadly, not all jewelry is created equal. Cheap body jewelry, often manufactured in China, contains nickel, a silver white naturally occurring metal.

Nickel is the leading cause of skin allergies and irritation that can be as small as a red spot to as large as broken, blistered skin in extreme reactions. It is estimated that 5.8% of adult Americans are allergic to nickel and nearly 1/3 of the jewelry in the market contains nickel in some form. If you have reacted to nickel once the body is more prone to sensitivity in the future wearing or coming into contact with it can create a reaction and prolonged irritation can mean treat is more difficult..

Leading dermatologist and specialist in irritant dermatitis Dr. Maibach suggested the following tips:

Look for jewelry and clothing labelled "nickel-free" or "hypoallergenic"
Wear only stainless steel, platinum or gold jewelry if you know you are allergic to nickel
Discontinue wearing jewelry that causes any noticeable skin irritation, such as redness or itching
Use 1% hydrocortisone cream or ointment, which can be purchased over-the-counter, to treat nickel-induced dermatitis
See your dermatologist if symptoms worsen or do not improve within three to five days of not wearing jewelry
Recent health warnings have also made people aware of the use of lead in some cheap jewelry. Public health awareness and strict regulations has significantly lowered the occurrences in health related issues due to lead in the United States. Jewelry products purchased outside the United States can not provide you with the same assurance and the health affects of lead include damage to the central nervous system and in children, learning difficulties. Always ask questions and if in doubt, don't purchase cheap jewelry from countries that don't employ the same strict regulation.

A good indication that your jewelry contains nickel is the remnants of a black mark a result of the nickel reacting with your skin. Remember the jewelry you are using is not only coming in contact with your skin, but with the delicate internal tissue inside your belly. Why risk your skin and your health when AlluringBody has a beautiful range of nickel and lead free, low allergy, quality body jewelry that will suit every occasion.

Watch as Lyndzi teaches you everything you need to know about how to change out a belly ring.  From standard banana bell styles, to rings with beautiful dangles, and even top drop navel jewelry, she changes out her jewelry in real time while giving belly piercing tips and know-how.

As Lyndzi explains in the video, most belly piercings are initially done with a regular surgical grade stainless steel banana barbell belly ring, usually with gem tips, and these items should also be used during sleep and for general daily wear.  During the day and for special occasions, dangling belly rings (those that have a charm, chains, or some type of movable decoration) are also a common choice.

Perhaps one of the most difficult belly rings to put in for the first time, the last common type of navel ring, is the top drop or “top down” style.  These, like the celtic cross belly jewelry shown in the video, are exactly what they sound like: a belly ring that has the decoration at the top instead of the bottom.  This style of navel jewelry is inserted through a piercing from the top and then has a bottom ball that secures it in place.

Top Down Style Navel Rings

I hope this doesn’t make me sound like a dipstick, but this video was actually really helpful. When you take it out for the first time to put a new one in you need to know which kind it is and I never would’ve known that I was trying to put in a “top drop” one if it weren’t for watching. No wonder it looked funny!

One of the neatest new trends in jewelry for the Fall season is the incorporation of Egyptian motifs and coloring.  A return to rich golden and copper hues, along with traditional ancient Egyptian gem tones and opulent styling is easy to pull off and easy on the wallet, as faux costume jewelry makes a serious comeback.

Egyptian Style Jewelry Trend

To monopolize on this new trend in fashion, costume choices for Halloween or other parties are a fun way of trying out the style to see what works and what doesn’t, and to discover first hand your own personal preferences.  For costuming the aesthetic can be a little more bold, but follow these quick tips and you’ll be able to walk like an Egyptian for a day at the office or a night out on the town.

1. Add some uniquely Egyptian touches

One of the easiest ways to go Egyptian is with arm bands; the style is unmistakable, the look is on trend, and the idea is versatile.  This can be done with bracelets that fit above the elbow, or for an added draw, with temporary tattooing.  To go the tattoo or body paint route, just stick with warm tones or monochrome and go for simple tribal motifs.  Incorporating elements of the sun is a true to form bonus, as the Egyptians were a sun worshiping culture.

Egyptian Style Armband Temporary Body Art

2. Pull Egyptian coloring into your gem and crystal elements

Traditionally Egyptian jewelry would include a variety of semi-precious gems that can be found today or whose coloring can be easily copied.  Amazonite and Amethyst (purple), Lapis Lazuli and Turquoise (blue and bluish green), and Quartz, Garnet, and Jasper (clear, to golden yellow, to orangish brown, or even bright red in color) are just some of these.  While almost any hue can be incorporated into gem coloring for an Egyptian look, warm golds, reds, bright blues and blue-greens, and varying tones of purple will give a hint of opulence all on their own while maintaining authenticity.

Egyptian Style Gem Belly Rings

3. Get your gold on

For piercings of the face and ears, layering gold and copper tones and keeping shapes simple with studs, small spikes, or hoops, is a surefire way to keep your style decidedly Egyptian.

Faux Gold Pierced Jewelry

4. Go with what you know

Motifs that include snakes, birds, or twisted chain are a style bonus, especially when in costume as Nefertiri or Cleopatra.  Another great staple of Pharaoh-like adornment: the ankh, an ancient symbol of eternal life.

Body Jewelry with Ankh Dangles

Now that you’ve got the Egyptian look down to a science, there’s just one thing left to do: raid your mummy’s jewelry box for some sweet antique gold earrings.

Body piercing has been around since the dawn of time, but it has grown more popular and public over the last few decades. While some fashion historians claim that the popularity of body jewelry has been spurred by celebrities joining in the fun, we contend that the popularity of body jewelry in general and the acceptance of body piercing by mainstream America (and the world) have given celebrities permission to express themselves without fear of being branded undesirable or a rebel. Think we’re wrong? Take a look at which celebs sport body jewelry – and where they’re wearing it.

Navel piercings are the single most popular piercing outside of ear piercing, and that’s no different among the celebrities. Who do you know that wears a belly ring? How about…

Many women are able to wear belly rings and other body jewelry throughout their pregnancies with no problems. Every body is different though, and your body may react a little differently. It’s not uncommon for the navel ridge to thin during pregnancy, making a belly ring more uncomfortable. If you want to keep your navel piercing open, a piercing professional will have suggestions on how to best do that.

The most common suggestion is to change your metal ring for more flexible body jewelry or a piece of monofilament nylon fishing line. If the piercing is relatively new and hasn’t yet had a chance to heal fully, it may be better to let it close and re-open the piercing after delivery.

Most doctors agree that navel jewelry is usually comfortable up to about the sixth month. After that, some women find that their navel has pushed out, or that their ring or bar is getting banged more often. It may be enough to change out your usual ring for a banana bar, which moves with your body more easily. If the piercing has been open long enough to be completely healed and you’re accustomed to changing your navel jewelry, you could try to keep it open by running a piece of body jewelry through it and wearing it a few hours each day. Before you decide to do this, though, speak to your piercing professional to get their recommendation.

A newer option is to replace the metal belly jewelry with a PFTE bar. PFTE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) is the material that they use to make artificial heart valves. It is soft, flexible and can be sterilized. Some of the advantages of a PFTE bar are:

It’s very flexible and will bend with you (and the baby as it grows)It’s less likely to have skin stick to it, making healing easier and quickerIt doesn’t conduct heat so it doesn’t get hot in the sun and burn your skinIt can be cut to exactly the right size with a pair of scissorsIt’s threaded, so that you can wear your favorite ends, caps or gems on the ends of a PFTE barThe PFTE bar can be sterilized just like metal

If you are considering getting pierced during your pregnancy:

Most reputable piercers will either refuse to do the piercing, or discourage you from it. The Association of Professional Piercers’ official position is that your body should be concentrating on the task of keeping you and your baby healthy during pregnancy, and piercing distracts from that task. At least as importantly, if you contract or develop any sort of infection because of the piercing, you could be putting your baby at risk. This holds true of nearly any piercing, but is especially important in navel piercings – not, as you might think because of its physical proximity to the growing baby, but because navel piercings are more prone to infection and take far longer to heal.

If you’re concerned that your nipple piercing will interfere with your ability to breastfeed a baby, there’s good news. Because of the structure of the breast, it’s very unlikely that a piercing will block all the milk ducts. The La Leche League strongly suggests removing nipple jewelry during actual nursing because of the risk of injury to the baby. It’s possible for jewelry to get loose and become lodged in the baby’s throat, or for the hard edges of metal or plastic to injure the baby’s gums, tongue, soft palate or hard palate.
