On August 3rd, 1990, George Bush approved a joint resolution declaring November “National American Indian Heritage Month.” This is a month dedicated to learning more about the legacy and history of Native Americans. The goal was to give recognition to the first Americans who helped established and explore the United States.
National Indian Heritage Month provides a time for native peoples to keep their traditions and culture alive. Congress chose November because it was the traditional harvest season and a time of celebration and thanksgiving for American Indians. The first thanksgiving was a three day feast in celebration of good harvest by the pilgrims and Native Americans. It was also a time to give thanks for reaching the New World safely. This first festive gathering took place in the autumn of 1621. However, Thanksgiving was not an annual observance in the United States until 1863, when President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed it a national holiday. Today, we celebrate Thanksgiving Day on the forth Thursday of every November, and this year it falls on November 24th. Thanksgiving Day is historically known for celebrating the year’s harvest, but it’s also a time for Fall traditions.
This holiday is not only a time to reflect on the great accomplishments of the American Indians, but it’s also the perfect time to celebrate family, friends, food, and beautiful Autumn weather. Blue is shaping up to be Fall’s favorite fashion hue, with celebrities, designers, and trendy fashion bloggers all stepping into cool aquatic clothes, accessories, and beauty regimens. From smalltime street to big-time spotlight, celebs across all continents have been seen embracing blue via high wattage locks.
And blue beauty doesn’t just stop at pop-culture, as several recent runway shows have been ablaze with blue make-up on eyes and lips, graphic blue nail art, and (you guessed it) more blue hair.
Blue also made a strong appearance at the Emmys this year, with gorgeous galactic and lightly gothic pieces bringing feminine beauty to every edge of the red carpet.
In runway, London designers showed blue across the board, with hues ranging from light, to bright, to deep and sultry jewel tones.
And at Mexico’s Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, countless designers unveiled show-stopping pieces centered around the sweetness of sapphire.
Blue outerwear and accessories are having a moment in the sun as well, with gorgeous azure options hitting the shelves of flagships all across Europe.
How to do bright blue for the real world? Sticking to the accessory side of the spectrum is a good way to go, especially for those lacking the panache appropriate to wearing a full length gown to the mall.
Earrings are always a safe bet for rocking brilliant color in a subtle and effortless way. As long as other jewelry is kept to a minimum, earrings can go anywhere from stud, to chandelier, to oo-la-la-hoop.

The month of October is Vegetarian Awareness Month, and we’re rolling out the green carpet to celebrate an ecologically friendly lifestyle. This month of awareness begins October first with World Vegetarian Day, and culminates November first with World Vegan Day, including the celebration of several related holidays in between like World Farm Animals Day (October 2nd) and Hug a Non-Meat Eater Day (October 4th).
The holiday was first established in 1977 by the North American Vegetarian Society and by the following year had the support of the International Vegetarian Union. During this month, many vegetarian and vegan groups around the world work to educate and empower their local communities, spreading the ideals of compassion, animal rights, environmentally sound practices, and healthier lifestyle through vegetarianism. The Monday Campaigners Inc and the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health have even begun an international initiative known as “Meatless Monday,” which encourages non-vegetarians to abstain from meat eating on Mondays in an effort to boost their health and reduce their carbon footprint. Other events around the US include the World Veg Festival in San Francisco, free vegetarian meals and appetizers offered at hundreds of vegetarian restaurants, and Vegetarian Summerfest held every year in the Northeast.
Even for those who aren’t vegetarian, the month of October is a great time to support the ethics, compassion, and environmental consciousness that walk hand in hand with a meat free lifestyle. Some fun ways to join the initiative in your own community include:
Hosting a meat free dinner party
Serving a meatless meal at your local homeless shelter
Planting a community vegetable garden
Wearing earth friendly clothing, accessories, and jewelry
Jewelry and accessories that are made of natural materials like stone, or leather alternatives like faux leather, are a great option if you’re looking for items that are more ecologically sound.
Whether or not you eat meat, celebrating Vegetarian Awareness Month is just naturally cool.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. While not many kids have to think about this illness personally, most of us know a mom, aunt, sister, cousin, teacher or friend who has been affected by breast cancer.
