What's the point of cardio?

If you're weight training and trying to build muscle, what's the point of cardio? Like wouldn't you just burn the calories you need to build your muscle after working out resulting in loss of muscle if anything. The only way I could understand it is if you've even in excess and are trying to burn off the rest to get back to your e.g. 3000 cals so you don't put on fat.
