Question to the quadrature

If you had X =(u-4) ^(1/2) + 1
Why have you to-1, to get x-1=(u-4)^(1/2)
And then square (X-1) ^ 2 = u-4
Instead of X do straight path to quadrature ^ 2 =(u-4) + 1 ^ 2
???
