Discussion for A-Level students, including those studying VCEs and for those choosing their A-Level subjects. Old 13 Minutes Ago: 6th October 2011 20:27 Hello everyone,
can someone help me on this:-
the mean mass of hydrated salt is 4.09
the mean mass of anhydrous salt is 2.205g
the mean mass of water removed is 1.885g
we need to find what element it is like xso4.5h20?? we need to see which element is x

so far what i have done got the no of moles of water removed which is 0.10472 and then divided it by 5 due to the mole ratio which gives 0.020944 and them i found out the RMM of xs04 which is 0.0011635 and then i multiplied it by 96.1(mr of so4) which will give me 64.04 and then i did 64.04-0.0011635 which gives me 64.02? is this correct and i consider this element to be copper?

are my correct or have i done something wrong thanks

RMM of XSO4 cannot be less that 1
You have moles of XSO4 which is 0.020944 assuming your calculation is correct. And you have the mass of XSO4 given in the question 2.205g
Divide mass by moles to get RMM see how you go from there
