There are many different types of surface piercing. These piercings follow a channel which follows the plane of a flap of skin anywhere on the body, rather than piercing right through the skin tissue where it's thin enough in a convex or concave area.

Surface piercings are becoming increasingly popular with anti-eyebrows, nape piercings, hip piercings, and many others growing in popularity, and microdermal anchors becoming more widespread.

Sometimes surface piercings are difficult to heal, because, as the body rejects the body jewelry as a foreign object, the jewellery is pushed to the surface, causing the piercing to 'grow out', but proper placement and jewellery selection by an experienced body piercer can help alleviate this problem.

Corset piercing, a series of bilaterally symmetrical piercings, normally done on the back, intended to be laced like a corset.

Madison piercing, a horizontal piercing located just above the collarbone, at the base of the neck.

Vertical Tragus, in front of the ear through the tragus.

Hand web piercing, located in the webbing between any of the fingers on the hand.

Since the body is naturally designed to reject foreign objects, surface piercings can have reactions whilst healing. Don't rub or disturb the new surface piercing, and follow the aftercare advise of your piercist. Personal factors, such as general health, blood flow, and skin type play an important role in whether a surface piercing is rejected or not.
