This week is National Native American Heritage week, and one of the funnest ways to celebrate our early American ancestors is by learning about their culture and history, and giving our own style a natural boost with beautiful jewelry inspired by the American Indian spirit.

Celebrating Native American Heritage and Jewelry

Prior to the immigration of European settlers to the Americas, there were many indigenous tribes spread across what is now the United States.  These ranged from tribes in the East who had developed large villages on communal lands and farmed their own vegetables, to nomadic Western tribal groups who were dependant on hunting and followed the movements of large herds.  Many of these tribes led a simple existence living off of the land and sea, and passed down their histories and tribal traditions orally.   Once the American colonies were established, the settlement and purchase of land areas by Europeans, along with the introduction of European diseases, began to wipe out some of these indigenous tribes and cause political unrest over movement and land ownership.

Those of Native American descent that are living today in the U.S. enjoy a rich cultural heritage that is being preserved for future generations, including spoken native languages, traditional art and ceremony, and the histories of their tribes as passed down through generations.  Amongst the most commonly used elements in traditional jewelry and adornment across many American Indian tribes were feathers, stone, shells, turquoise, bone, animal horn, and woven or embroidered textiles.

Today’s versions of this type of jewelry may be made using different materials and cast a wider fashion net over color and shape, but the basic style elements of natural jewelry remain the same.  The popularity of turquoise, bone, and feathers in particular in Western style jewelry has even expanded.

Whether it’s jewelry and traditional clothing, or just getting familiar with the history and tradition of your local Native American tribes, regardless of our heritage, this week is one week in history that we can all celebrate.
